Spain: Human chain and hospital lock-in over ‘limited’ provision of Hepatitis C drug

A HUMAN chain around the ministry of health building in Madrid in support of Hepatitis C patients who have staged a lock-in at the 12 de Octubre hospital called for medication to be supplied to all those who need it.

A drug which is proven to be effective against the liver disease in 95% of cases was approved by the health ministry three months ago, but not every patient has been prescribed this expensive medication and those who have are obliged to queue up at the hospital daily to see whether or not they will be given it that morning.

So far, the group of Hepatitis C patients who have shut themselves into the hospital, displaying banners on the balconies of its windows, have been there for 10 days.
